British Bee Charity website

Case study: Creating a buzz for The British Bee Charity

Wicko Design was approached by Greg Bool, Chairman of The British Bee Charity, for our expertise in building and maintaining e-commerce websites.

The story

The British Bee Charity raises funds and promotes initiatives to support the welfare of bees. The not-for-profit organisation was formed in 2018 with 20-30 local beekeeping enthusiasts in Surrey. Interest grew rapidly, and by 2022 the membership base had risen to more than 100 ─ and it continues to grow today. The charity runs fundraising events, volunteer projects, and educational visits for local groups and schools.

The objective

The charity’s previous website was extremely rigorous, and the team found it difficult to use. They wanted to move to a more user-friendly, manageable platform, and add new areas to the site, including a section exclusively for members. This change was driven by a desire to get more traffic to the site, raise awareness of their work and increase sales.

Our approach

A full e-commerce solution

We moved the website from WiX to a WordPress platform, featuring a built-in commerce system using WooCommerce. As part of the move, we created a section where members customers can login, view member-only content and purchase products at discounted rates.

Introduction of an events page

We built a new section into the site to allow the charity to promote their events, which is a big part of what they do. Every person with admin rights can now login, and quickly and easily add the details of any upcoming event to help spread the word and increase attendance.

Built-in SEO and analytics tools

We improved the website’s SEO ranking by adding meta details, schema and keywords to the relevant pages. It’s also connected to Google Analytics, Search Console and Merchant Centre to help support processes and acquisitions.

On-going support and training

The team receive on-going support with a website maintenance program that ensures the site is always kept up to date, backed up and secure. Training and advice is given to members with admin and editorial rights, so that they can update and add new pages, products, and events when required.
